What Census 2027 asks

The government has published every question in both phases. Here they are in plain words, with what's new since 2011.

Phase 1 · April to September 2026

About your home

Asked once per household, about the house, its amenities and what the household owns.

What's new: internet access, smartphones, LPG or piped gas connections, the main cereal eaten and a mobile number. The 2011 question on banking services is gone; Phase 2 now asks each person how many bank accounts they have.

Asked about everyone in the household: who they are, what they do and where they came from.

What's new: caste is recorded for everyone, not just Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, for the first time since 1931. Also new: spouse's name, nationality, parents' details, permanent address, digital literacy, place of COVID-19 vaccination, number of bank accounts, ID numbers where the person has them, and whether they have a driving licence.
