About this site

Census 2027 explains India's census in plain words: the latest numbers for every state, and a guide to Census 2027. It is an independent site, not a government website.

Where the numbers come from

State and India figures come from the Census of India 2011 (Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India): its Primary Census Abstract, its Houselisting and Housing Census tables, and table C-01 on religion.

The map shows India's states and union territories as they were in 2011, with India's official outline, drawn from DataMeet's 2011 district boundaries.

The Census 2027 guide is written from Gazette of India notifications and announcements from the Office of the Registrar General, India and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

How the numbers are worked out

State and India figures are added up from district figures. Household figures (phones, toilets and so on) are worked out from district shares weighted by households, and rounded to whole percentages.

The literacy rate covers people aged 7 and over. The sex ratio is women for every 1,000 men. Density uses the area under Indian administration.

These are the final 2011 figures, so a few differ from the early (provisional) ones still quoted elsewhere: India's literacy rate is 73.0%, not 74.04%.
